Escanaba's Amazon delivery partner. Hiring drivers now.
NorthStar Parcel is a third-party Delivery Service Partner affiliated with Amazon, based in Escanaba. We're responsible for the last mile: getting packages from the station to customers' homes, businesses, and apartments across the U.P. We launch September 24 and we're hiring our first team right now.
Safety and reliability. Everything else we can coach.
Every candidate hears the same thing in the interview. Safety and reliability are the two parts of this job you have to own, because nobody at NorthStar can be in the van driving it safely for you, and nobody can wake you up and make sure you're coming in to work. Beyond that: treat people the way you'd want to be treated. Hover over or tap each one to see what it actually looks like on the job.
Safety
Safety is a non-negotiable across the board.
Reliability
The team needs to be able to count on you day in and day out.
Teamwork
We deliver as a team, or we fail as a team.
Accountability
Own your actions. Take the coaching.
Customer Service
Treat people the way you'd want to be treated.
Local Leadership
Leadership is at the station every morning, not in an office somewhere else.

Routes vary day to day based on package volume, geography, and delivery density. New drivers typically start on smaller "nursery routes" while they learn the job before moving into a full route.
Three things that surprise new drivers.
The number of packages. A full route is a lot of stops, and it's more than most people picture. How physical it is. You're in and out of the van all day, walking, carrying, climbing stairs, going up long driveways, in whatever weather the U.P. is doing that day. Everything is tracked. Every scan, every stop, every hard brake. It can all be traced back to you, easily. That's not a threat; it's just how this business works, and it's why we say think about what you're doing before you do it.
This is not the easiest job in the world, but it's far from the hardest. People who put in the effort get back what they put into it.
Why drive for NorthStar instead of somewhere else?
- Schedule flexibility, and 3-day weekends on a full-time compressed schedule
- Freedom to work on your own out on the road
- Solid pay, health benefits for eligible full-time employees, and a 401(k)
- Room to grow into trainer, dispatch, and fleet roles as we add routes
- Being part of the start of a brand new operation
Weather up here doesn't take a day off.
Escanaba sees real seasonal swings. Over the course of a year, that means delivering through all of this:
Add uneven surfaces, long rural driveways, and longer drive times between some stops, and you've got a job that asks you to manage your route while staying aware of your surroundings, in every season. New drivers start on smaller routes to build that awareness before taking on a full day.
Escanaba, and up to 90 minutes out.
Every route starts and ends at DLR8 in Escanaba, but our delivery area reaches up to about an hour and a half of drive time from the station. Some days that's Escanaba and Gladstone: apartments, storefronts, in-town stops. Some days you're heading toward Marquette, Iron Mountain, Manistique, or Menominee, with long stretches of highway, county roads, and a two-track with a mailbox at the end.
Where you go depends on the route you're assigned that day. Exact coverage shifts with Amazon's routing and grows as we add routes.
The kind of person we're looking for.
- You're willing to put the effort into doing the job right
- You actually care about doing it correctly and safely
- You understand safety is truly the most important thing we do every day
- We can count on you to show up on your scheduled days, day in and day out
- You're trying to improve your life and committed to doing it the right way
- You respect all walks of life, the equipment, and yourself
- You're accountable for your own actions
Who this isn't going to work for.
- You're just here for a paycheck and don't care what you're doing
- You don't think about what you're doing before you do it
- You can't perform the job safely
- Your attendance is inconsistent
- You can't be coached
- You're never accountable for your own actions
Safety. Safety. Safety. If that's not going to be your priority, this isn't the job for you, and it's better for everyone to know that now.

Our mission
Deliver packages safely, efficiently, and accurately every single day, and create real opportunities for the people on this team to grow.
Safety & culture
Safety is a non-negotiable across the board. The culture is a team that takes care in what it's doing and has each other's backs.
Year one
30–40 routes a day. 80–100 drivers who fit the NorthStar mold. Consistent Fantastic+ scorecards.
Five years out
Deliver the entire U.P. Own the Midwest region. Set the new standard for what a DSP looks like.
Why the name NorthStar.
People have used the North Star to find their way for as long as anyone has been keeping track. It's a symbol of direction, and that's what we want this company to be for the people who work here.
It fits where we are, too. Escanaba is one of the most northern delivery stations in Amazon's last-mile network, and the U.P. gets called the last 100 miles of delivery. The green and gold come from Tommy's Minnesota roots: he grew up playing hockey and the North Stars were always his team.
We know what people think about DSPs. We're different.
A lot of people have a negative view of DSPs, from their own experience or from what they've heard. NorthStar Parcel is different. We actually prioritize safety instead of just punishing people who aren't safe. Our fleet, equipment, processes, and culture will always be top notch. The playing field is fair for every employee, across the board, and we will never let favoritism, lack of effort, or a bad vehicle jeopardize this operation or the people in it.
How NorthStar runs
- Safety is a non-negotiable across the board. It's the most important thing we do every day.
- Safety message and stand-up before every loadout; vans inspected every shift and grounded if they're not right
- Coaching first. We'll show you the video, explain the why, and give you the chance to fix it.
- Rescues handled fairly, and people who need them every day get coached, not ignored
- Driver of the Week and Month, and extra routes for the people who earn them
- Trainer, dispatch, and fleet roles filled from this team first
- Giving back to local youth sports and education as we grow
Tommy Gaughan
My name is Thomas Gaughan. I go by Tommy, Tom, or anything else you want to call me. I'm originally from Buffalo, Minnesota, went to the University of Minnesota Duluth, and have lived in the Minneapolis area for about the last nine years. I come from a big family, four brothers and two sisters, and I'm the exact middle child. Sports have always been a big part of my life. I played football, hockey, lacrosse, and baseball growing up.
Coming from a big family and playing on teams my whole life, I learned the power a good family, team, or group of people can have when they work together toward one goal. I've been part of some really good teams and some really bad ones, and one thing is always constant: a team that's willing to work together, be accountable for themselves, and have each other's backs is a successful team. I was raised to help when you're able, but also to understand that if I can't be accountable for myself, how can I expect to help anyone else? I've always tried to add value to whatever situation I'm in and be part of the solution instead of against it. I believe a good team, family, or company can have a bigger impact on a community than most people realize.
Delivery kind of fell into my life. Growing up, I never dreamed of delivering packages for a living. What I did dream about was owning my own company and working with people. Over about nine years in the last-mile space I've built, rebuilt, and refined some very high-performing teams, starting as a package handler and delivery driver and working up through training, operations, and management. Most recently I managed almost every part of a fairly large Amazon DSP operation in Maple Grove, Minnesota. That's where I was accepted into Amazon's Road to Ownership program in 2024. I graduated in 2026 and was offered the opportunity to run my own Delivery Service Partner here in Escanaba. I've worked for every opportunity I've been given, and this one is no different.
Why own a DSP instead of keep managing one? Through my experience in this industry I believe I've learned how to excel in it at a very high level, and I believe I have the tools to set a new bar for what a successful DSP looks like. I want the opportunity and the responsibility of building the team and the company I know I'm capable of building. I'm building NorthStar because I'm excited to build the team I want to build.
To anyone reading this, whether you're applying, already on the team, or just from Escanaba: I'm excited to start this journey with you.
What we like at NorthStar
I'm the owner, and what we look for is simple: safe, reliable drivers who want to be part of this team. People who think about what they're doing before they do it and take some care doing it. People who show up on their scheduled days, own their actions, take coaching, and treat others the way they want to be treated. Effort matters more than experience here. If that's you, you'll do well at NorthStar.
What we're doing differently
Things I learned running the operation in Minnesota.
- The fleet. A safe, maintained van every shift, no exceptions.
- Equipment that works, so it's never the reason your day goes sideways
- Netradyne used to coach, not just to punish
- Write-ups and documented discussions done right, so nobody gets blindsided
- A culture people actually want to be part of
Off the clock
I like the NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB, and college games. I'm a big Vikings, Wolves, Wild, Twins, and Gophers fan. I really enjoy golfing, hiking, fishing, skiing, and being outside in general. I've also got a two-year-old Vizsla who comes along for most of it.

Questions we get asked a lot.
Straight answers about the job, the pay, the schedule, and how NorthStar runs. If yours isn't here, call us.
Do I need delivery experience or a CDL?
No. No previous delivery experience and no CDL are required. You need a valid driver's license, to be at least 21, and to be legally authorized to work in the U.S. We provide paid training.
What are the two things NorthStar cares about most?
Safety and reliability. Those are the two parts of this job you have to own, because nobody can be in the van driving it safely for you, and nobody can wake you up and make sure you're coming in. Safety is a non-negotiable across the board. Beyond those two, treat people the way you'd want to be treated, and we'll get along fine.
Is my driving monitored?
Yes. Every van has Netradyne cameras that monitor your driving throughout the day. If you get a safety event, your route gets paused and leadership calls you, explains what happened and what it means for the operation and for your own record with Amazon and NorthStar. When you're back at the station we watch the video together and have a documented conversation. Depending on how serious it is, you could be pulled off route for the day, suspended, or let go. You're allowed no more than 3 safety violations in a 90-day period; past that it's up to a 2-week suspension or termination.
What happens if I'm late?
First time, a verbal warning. Third time, a documented discussion and a week off the schedule. If the pattern keeps going, more documented discussions; 3 write-ups in a 90-day period is grounds for termination, depending on how bad it is and what it did to the day's operation.
How do breaks and lunch work?
Two paid 15-minute breaks during your 10-hour day (they can't be stacked together) and one 30-minute unpaid lunch that you must clock out for. You can go up to 15 minutes off route for lunch, but clock out before you start driving there. Bringing your own lunch and eating in the van is fine as long as you clean up after yourself.
How do rescues work?
If dispatch asks you to rescue a teammate, that's a requirement, unless you told us before your route that you couldn't and leadership okayed it. We keep it fair, and realistically you shouldn't be doing more than one or two a week. We're not sending rescues to steal hours or make anyone's day harder. But if we don't deliver our packages at a 99.8% clip, we fail as a team and a company. And if you're the one who's behind, dispatch will reach out, figure out what's slowing you down, and get you help. You'll never be rushed; safety comes first.
Is there a probation period?
Yes, 90 days. During that time you can be let go for any reason if it's clear you're not a good fit for this team. That said, there will always be coaching and documented conversations before it gets to that point. Nobody's going to be blindsided.
How much notice for time off?
Ideally at least a week. If something comes up, dispatch needs to hear from you at least 24 hours ahead. Communication is everything.
Do I work for Amazon or for NorthStar?
You work for NorthStar Parcel LLC. We're a third-party Delivery Service Partner affiliated with Amazon, responsible for the last mile of delivery out of station DLR8 in Escanaba. Amazon sets the routes and the standards; NorthStar hires, trains, schedules, and pays the team.
What's the pay?
Delivery Drivers start at $21.50 per hour, with paid training. Overtime and additional shifts may be available based on business needs.
What's the schedule like?
Shifts start between 10:00 and 11:15 AM at the station and run about 10 hours. Full-time drivers work a compressed schedule, which means 3-day weekends most weeks, and everyone works at least one weekend day. It's planned, not guaranteed, because delivery volume changes.
How long is a shift, and how many stops?
Shifts vary with volume. Routes are built to be completed within a 10-hour window. There's no set number of stops we can promise; new drivers start on smaller nursery routes and work up toward a full route (typically 20–25 stops per hour once you're past nursery level).
Do I use my own vehicle or phone?
No. NorthStar provides the delivery vehicle, fuel, vehicle insurance while working, and the delivery device and equipment.
What about a uniform and shoes?
You receive an Amazon delivery uniform, plus a $150 Zappos voucher for work shoes. Pick something sturdy and slip-resistant; you'll be walking and climbing in and out of the van all day.
Is there a referral bonus?
Not yet, but possibly later as NorthStar grows. Referrals from good drivers are still the best hires we make, so send people our way.
What about benefits?
Paid time off, health insurance for eligible full-time employees, and a 401(k). You also get an Amazon delivery uniform, a $150 Zappos voucher for work shoes, and the van, fuel, and equipment. Eligibility and waiting periods for health coverage are covered in detail during hiring, before you accept an offer, so there are no surprises.
Is there a background check or drug screen?
Yes. Both are standard Amazon DSP requirements and are completed before training.
What does training look like?
A 2-day Amazon training class: Day 1 in the classroom with modules and a final test, Day 2 an on-the-road driving test. About 8 hours per day for those two training days; regular shifts are 10 hours. After that, an orientation day at NorthStar and ride-alongs with experienced trainers.
What's the weather really like on this job?
Escanaba sees real seasonal swings: rain, snow and cold, summer heat, wind, and early darkness in winter. You'll deliver in all of it. Add rural driveways and long drive times between some stops, and this is a job that asks you to stay aware of your surroundings in every season.
Can I move up?
Yes. NorthStar promotes from within wherever possible. Trainer, Dispatcher, and Fleet Manager roles will be filled by strong, dependable people from our own team as we grow.
How do I apply, and how fast will I hear back?
Use the online application. It takes about five minutes and sends your answers straight to NorthStarDelivers@gmail.com. Every one gets read, and you'll hear back within 5–10 business days. Prefer to talk first? Call (612) 470-6894.
What do I bring on day one?
Your valid driver's license, your Amazon badge, your uniform on, proper shoes, and whatever you need to be comfortable out delivering all day: lunch, water, layers.

How scheduling works
- The week's schedule is posted in Slack. Check it before your first shift of the week.
- Start times: shifts begin between 10:00 and 11:15 AM at the station. Plan on a 10-hour shift.
- Full-time drivers generally work a compressed schedule, not Monday–Friday. Everyone works at least one weekend day.
- Breaks: two paid 15s (not stacked) and one 30-minute unpaid lunch you clock out for. Up to 15 minutes off route for lunch, but clock out before you drive there.
- Extra shifts and rescues are offered first to drivers with strong attendance and safety records.
- Changes after the schedule is posted are announced in Slack, not by text or word of mouth.
If you can't make a shift
When someone doesn't show up, the route doesn't disappear. Someone else has to cover it. So:
- Message dispatch in Slack as early as possible. For a same-day issue, that means before your start time, not at it.
- Planned time off: at least a week's notice. If something comes up: at least 24 hours. Communication is everything.
- Attendance is tracked. First late: verbal warning. Third late: documented discussion and a week off the schedule. Three write-ups in 90 days is grounds for termination.
A typical delivery day
| Block | What's happening | Your job |

| Pre-trip | Vehicle inspection (DVIC), 6 photos to Slack | Front, back, both sides, cab, cargo. Report any damage before you leave. |
| Loadout | Load and organize your route | Organize by stop order so the route runs smooth |
| On the road | Delivery route, breaks & lunch | Safe driving, photo-on-delivery, packages in secure locations, check in with dispatch |
| Rescues | Helping a teammate finish, or getting help | Communicate early if you're behind; help when you're asked |
| Return | Post-trip inspection, return packages & equipment | Fuel if asked, report issues, clock out |
Pinned from Tommy
Our first team sets the standard.
We're building NorthStar from the ground up. The habits and culture we establish in these first few months will become the foundation of this company. Candidates joining now aren't just filling a position: you're part of the group that defines how NorthStar operates for years to come. Safety, reliability, accountability, teamwork, respect, continuous improvement. That's the list.
Two things we enforce from day one.
Safety and reliability. We don't expect Day 1 performance to look like an experienced driver's, and pace and quality will be developed through coaching. But unsafe behavior or poor attendance gets addressed immediately. We can coach someone into a better delivery driver; we can't build a strong team around someone who doesn't take safety seriously.
Rescues.
When dispatch asks you to rescue, that's a requirement unless you told us before your route that you couldn't and it was okayed. We'll keep it fair; you shouldn't be doing more than one or two a week. We're not sending rescues to steal anyone's hours. If we don't deliver at a 99.8% clip, we fail as a team. Put your best foot forward when you're asked.
Peak starts before peak.
Hiring for peak season ramps in late September and October so new teammates get real delivery experience before volume climbs. If you know someone dependable, send them to the Careers page. Referrals from strong drivers are the best hires we make.
If you're new, this is the exact order things happen. If you're stuck on a step, message Tommy.

Safety is non-negotiable.
No package, route, metric, or delivery is more important than getting our people home safely.
- Seatbelt on, every time
- No distracted driving. No phone use while driving.
- Obey speed limits & traffic signals; complete stops at stop signs
- Maintain safe following distance
- Safe backing practices
- Proper vehicle inspections; report concerns
- Awareness of dogs & property hazards
- Good judgment in severe weather
What we expect from you
| Safety | Drive safely and follow procedures, every time. |
|---|---|
| Quality | Deliver to the correct location, follow delivery instructions, photo-on-delivery, packages in secure spots. |
| Reliability | Show up consistently, and show up on time. |
| Efficiency | Maintain a productive pace throughout your route. |
| Customer service | Represent NorthStar professionally on every stop. |
| Coachability | Accept feedback, and use it to improve. |
How performance issues are handled
| Struggling on pace | Dispatch reaches out on the road, figures out the roadblock (route, access, van, phone, how you're doing), gets you support or a rescue, then a one-on-one when you're back. Finishing your route is the expectation; you'll never be rushed into unsafe driving to do it. |
|---|---|
| 1st occurrence | Coaching: find the root cause, correct the behavior. |
| 2nd occurrence | Documented discussion with clear expectations for improvement. |
| Continued | Write-up and progressive discipline. |
| No improvement | Suspension or termination depending on severity. |
| Netradyne event | Route paused, leadership calls you, we watch the video at the station and document it. Could mean being sent home, suspended, or let go depending on severity. Max 3 safety violations in 90 days; past that, up to 2 weeks suspension or termination. |
| First 90 days | Introductory period. You can be let go for any reason if it's not a fit, but you'll get coaching and documented conversations first. |
Vehicle standard, every shift
DVIC inspection. Six photos to Slack: front, back, both sides, cab, cargo. Report any damage before leaving.
Keep the cab clean, secure the cargo area, never leave the van running unattended.
